Think you have to have all the answers for your business? Think again.

Edition #006

Why am I the only one who can see the next step…

I feel like we’re working so hard, why aren’t we making progress…

It feels like I’m constantly repeating myself…

If you’ve ever felt like this… I get it.

AND… I can help you fix it.

Because what you have is the nightmare-inducing, business-crippling

curse of knowledge.

And there is a cure.

What’s the Curse of Knowledge?

The curse of knowledge is being so close to your business that you assume everyone knows the same things you do.

You’ve been working in your industry and in your business for so long that you forget what it’s like to be a beginner. But there are foundational systems, processes and expertise you have that other people don’t.

It’s like speaking a foreign language and forgetting that not everyone is fluent.

This can lead to communication breakdowns, misunderstandings, and a general disconnect between you and your team and potential clients.

And the worst part of this curse? You may not even know you have it.

Signs You Might Be Cursed:

  • Your marketing isn’t getting engagement.

You’re relying on business jargon and acronyms that half your team may not even know, let alone your potential clients. You have a confused audience, and therefore are not getting the engagement, leads, and conversions you want.

  • New hires aren’t catching on.

Training and onboarding new employees is seeming ineffective and inefficient. It feels like you are in a constant hiring and training cycle. Team members don’t want to ask questions. You feel like you’re constantly repeating yourself.

  • New solutions and ideas evade you.

Your team isn’t excited to share new ideas. You keep going back to what you know and default to what’s worked or not worked in the past, but remain uninspired.

  • You’re feeling frustrated and impatient.

    Who wouldn’t?

If any of the symptoms sound like your business, you’ve been cursed.

But curses are meant to be broken.

Breaking the Spell

There is an antidote. And as with many things in life, that first ingredient is awareness.

Once you have that, the rest of the recipe will fall into place.

When it comes to your marketing: Don’t overload your messaging with business jargon and acronyms that could make your average audience member’s eyes glaze over. When you confuse, you lose. Your customer is likely not interested in exactly how you make the magic happen, they just want the result. So limit your messages to the transformation they can expect from your product.

When it comes to your team: As the leader of your company, choose a few key messages and repeat, repeat, repeat. Repetition is key. A person needs to hear something 7 times before the information is fully retained or internalized, a concept often referred to as the “Rule of 7.” Realize that what comes second nature to you, still has training wheels on for some of your team members. Remember what it’s like to be a beginner and what questions you had while starting a new project or skill.

Record a video playbook for core processes so team members can repeat as much as needed. This will save you a lot of time and future frustration.

When it comes to you: You need to create a culture of vulnerability and safety. An environment where team members aren’t afraid to ask questions, share ideas, and make mistakes. Your team can be empowered to come up with ideas that you might’ve never thought of because you were too close to the problem to begin with.

Final Thoughts

By overcoming the curse of knowledge, you create space to be surprised and inspire breakthroughs for the challenges you face in your business.

Magic happens when you don’t have all the answers.

And I am here to help figure out what those may be.
