How to Face the Fear One Step at a Time

Edition #028

Repeat after me…

I am smart.

I am capable.

I’ve built something incredible.

Do you believe it yet?

Or are you like many accomplished business leaders who sometimes feel paralyzed by fear?

Over the past few months, I’ve had the privilege of hearing the real, unfiltered worries of leaders like you.

And it’s striking how similar these fears are, even across different industries and business sizes.

What I’ve heard includes:

  • “I can’t launch this big opportunity without a business partner—I’m not sure I have what it takes.”
  • “I can’t replace myself, it’s taken me years to figure this out. What if no one else can do it?”
  • “I can’t let this leader go, even though the situation is putting everyone on edge.”
  • “I can’t imagine finding someone else with these technical skills, so I’ll put up with the drama.”
  • “I can’t charge more—what if my business dries up?”

Sound familiar? If so, you’re definitely not alone.

Fear is sneaky, but it’s not the truth.

Here’s what I consistently see as a coach:

The people facing these challenges are fully capable of moving forward. They have the skills, the experience, and the resilience.

But in the moment, fear distorts reality. It whispers doubts, magnifies potential risks, and makes you think you’re missing some essential quality, or safety net that others possess.

The truth?

Every leader who has successfully navigated these moments before you has felt the same way.

Fear is loud, it’s insistent, and it feels incredibly real. But it’s not a reliable guide to your actual capabilities or the reality of the situation.

Your promised land Is on the other side of fear.

Think back to any major breakthrough in your business…

Hiring your first employee, raising your prices, making a significant strategic shift. Was there fear involved?

Almost certainly.

But you did it anyway. You took the leap, faced the uncertainty, and you know what happened?

That same move likely feels like common sense.

The same is true for the challenge you’re facing today. The growth, the opportunity, and the peace of mind you seek are often found on the other side of that fear.

What to Try When “I Can’t” Shows Up

When fear starts whispering that you “can’t,” reframe the situation with this simple exercise:

  1. List the worst-case scenario: What’s the absolute worst thing that could happen? Really drill down and articulate it. Is it truly catastrophic, or is it primarily uncomfortable?
  2. List the best-case scenario: If this worked out beautifully, what would that look like? Paint a vivid picture of the positive possibilities.
  3. Find the first, smallest step forward: You don’t have to leap over fear in one bound. Just take one step today. As a wise friend once wrote, “I will proceed at a pace my nervous system can handle.”

The difference between those who break through and those who stay stuck isn’t talent—it’s courage. You already have what it takes. The next step is simply deciding to move forward.

Takeaways

  • Tell the fear to shut up. You already have what it takes. The next step is simply deciding to move forward, one small step at a time.

What’s one step you can take today, despite the fear?
