Before You Sign, Align: The 1 Hour Talk That Saves 80% of Partnerships
Have you ever worked with a perfect partner?
It feels like freedom!
You trust them completely, they deliver exactly when and how you expect it, and somehow, they just seem to know what you need before you ask.
This isn’t magic. This is alignment.
Here’s the truth: Partnerships rarely fall apart because people aren’t talented or committed. They stumble because no one stopped long enough to ask, “How are we actually going to work together?”
Cue the misunderstandings, the unspoken expectations, and the inevitable, frustrating “I thought you were handling that” moments.
The good news is you can prevent most of that pain with one simple, often-missed step…
Design the alliance before you dive in.
The Hidden Business Problem
Too often, we business leaders bring in partners (whether they are vendors, freelancers, or strategic allies) without handing them our playbook.
We hire for expertise and then assume they’ll “know what we want.”
But when expectations are fuzzy, even the greatest partners can’t hit the target.
They end up guessing, leading to friction, rework, and wasted time.
And when the inevitable bumps come (a missed deadline, a change in scope), there’s no agreed-upon process for how to handle them, leaving both sides scrambling.
The Missing Hour: Designing the Alliance
It only takes one hour upfront to align.
That’s it.
It’s called Designing the Alliance, and it’s the most critical partnership conversation you can have.
Here’s what to cover in that meeting:
- Outcomes: Why is the partner’s expertise needed, and what does success look like to you in 6–12 months? (Define the finish line.)
- Roles: What do I own, what do you own, and who decides what? (Clarify the lanes of responsibility.)
- Communication: How often will we check-in? What’s the feedback style (casual, formal, written)?
- Prior Learnings: What’s worked well in the past? What hasn’t? What quirks about my business do you need to know to succeed?
- Check-Ins: When something’s not working or feels off, how will we flag it and course-correct? (Create a safe space for difficult conversations.)
This conversation is the foundation of your alliance.
This Is Leadership, Not Overkill
This step isn’t overkill, it’s clarity. And to borrow from one of my favorite authors Brene Brown.
Clear is kind.
A short, clear conversation upfront prevents 80% of misunderstandings down the line.
It makes your partner feel trusted, informed, and empowered to deliver their best work from day one.
And most importantly, it keeps you from having to play project manager and cleanup crew later! Which was the whole point in delegating/hiring in the first place.
Think of it as partnership insurance, except it costs only a little bit of time.
Put Alignment in Practice
Leadership is about empowering others. When you are clear on outcomes from the start it sets everyone up for success.
Try this: Pick one current partner (even if you’ve worked together for years!) and have a 20-minute “alliance conversation” this week.
You’ll be amazed at how much smoother things run when the rules of the road are crystal clear.
