Three pillars successful leaders need to own their time

Edition #008

I know a man who lives in a castle.

It’s fabulously decorated and contains a complete 16th century library imported from Europe in the basement. (And that is only ONE of the impressive features of this dream home.)

He doesn’t have royal blood and he didn’t receive a massive inheritance…

He’s a small business owner who had a big vision for the future of his company.

When he and I first met, the weight of his vision was wearing him down and he lacked the support to help lighten the load.

We worked on implementing three pillars into his business that eventually allowed him to leave work behind and feel confident that business would continue on.

So when the opportunity to buy a castle presented itself, he was ready.

Three Pillars Successful Leaders Need to Own Their Time:

#1: A Clear Vision

The clear vision serves as a north star. It provides direction and purpose beyond the day-to-today tasks of running a business, and helps you make strategic decisions that align with long term goals.

Even better? A vision can be broken down into time-bound projects and action items that you’re able to properly delegate – both to yourself and your team!

#2: An Empowered Team

To see your vision come to life and enjoy the journey, you will need help. Chances are you already have a team with potential, they just need your encouragement and leadership to tap it.

Remember, an empowered team is LED instead of managed. Your job is to provide challenging goals, encouragement to innovate, check-ins, and regular feedback.

Then, entrust them to deliver results.

#3: A Business Operating System

This is the framework for how your business functions. It provides clarity on roles, responsibilities, and workflows. It helps everyone to see how their work impacts results so business can continue when you are there – and when you aren’t.

When building out your business operating system, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Break the vision down into a simple one or two page strategy.
  2. Include short and long term goals that are regularly updated.
  3. A meeting cadence that guides regular check-ins.
  4. Documented processes that deliver consistent results.
  5. A scorecard that tracks progress to the goals.

As a business owner, having the time and freedom to do more of what you love IS a realistic goal.   Check out photos from my client’s big project.

And I am here to help you build your own castle on the hill – literally and figuratively.

Until next time,

Laurie
